Atlas Optics Intrepid ED 8×42

The gang here at Eagle Optics rolled out the red carpet recently for a shipment of this binocular which had been out of stock for awhile. Why the celebrity treatment, you may ask? Quite simply, we have long known this bin can Stand and Deliver. It is our customers, though, whose feedback [...]

About Waterproofing & Fogproofing

Waterproof binoculars and spotting scopes are sealed internally with O-rings to prevent moisture, dust, and debris from compromising the inside of the instrument. Fogproofing means that the optical barrel (or barrels in the case of a binocular) is filled with nitrogen or argon gas to prevent internal fogging caused when subjecting the optic to temperature [...]

Nina on Swarovski

I have been on a steep yet enjoyable learning curve since joining the crew at Eagle Optics earlier this spring. I’ve become familiar with the mechanics of optics while handling and looking through a wide variety of binoculars and spotting scopes and appreciating the differences by quality and price. Clearly (no pun intended), [...]

About Eye Relief

When introduced to the realm of optical jargon, eye relief is a mysterious and often misunderstood number.  So, as an optics specialist, what might I tell you about eye relief?

Every binocular and spotting scope eyepiece has eye relief
Generally speaking, only eyeglasses wearers need concern themselves with eye relief.
The average eyeglasses wearer requires at least 15mm [...]

About Exit Pupil

A diminutive but technical definition of Exit Pupil is the diameter of the shaft of light (expressed in millimeters) that exits a binocular’s eyepiece that can enter through your eye’s pupillary opening. Exit Pupil is calculated by dividing a binocular’s aperture by its magnification, e.g. 42mm / 8x (for an 8×42 binocular) = 5.25mm.

Under bright [...]

When Bad things happen to Good Binoculars

For every broken binocular there’s a story - hopefully a good one! I remember during one field trip, when the jaeger watching was exceptional, the weather was just awful - high winds and rain for two straight days. Unfortunately, my Swarovski 8×30 SLC succumbed to the harsh elements and fogged internally. Though [...]

Best $200 Binocular!

Apart from its lack of name recognition, the Atlas Optics Sky King 8×42 at $199.99 is one of the best binocular deals on the market right now. Its optical quality compares very favorably, and sometimes exceeds, binoculars that cost nearly twice the price. When I bought my 8×42 EO Rangers nearly ten years ago, I [...]

Swarovski EL 42 “Swarovision”

Swarovski Optik recently announced their new Swarovski EL 42 Swarovision, a binocular that will deliver “ maximum peripheral definition, maximum contrast, and maximum color fidelity.” Isn’t it funny how every time a new high-end binocular comes to market, the superlatives used in describing its optical performance are presented as unbeatable? If the new EL [...]

Parallax

Some people report they’re unable to bring the “two circles of light” together when using binoculars that have a short close focus (3 to 5 feet). Actually, this happens to everyone but some people are more sensitive to it than others. The optical phenomenon they’re observing is called parallax and is perfectly normal [...]
