Swarovski EL 42 "Swarovision"

Swarovski Optik recently announced their new Swarovski EL 42 Swarovision, a binocular that will deliver “ maximum peripheral definition, maximum contrast, and maximum color fidelity.” Isn’t it funny how every time a new high-end binocular comes to market, the superlatives used in describing its optical performance are presented as unbeatable? If the new EL has maximized optical performance, can anything ever beat it? Perhaps we’ll have to wait another decade to find out, but I was fortunate to get my hands on one of these new bins a few weeks ago, and it vastly exceeded my expectations. Before looking through it, I would have said it wasn’t possible to improve upon existing high-end binoculars by the margin I observed. Apart from the best resolution I’ve ever seen, the most impressive feature was its field flatness; it has easily the best edge-to-edge sharpness of any binocular I’ve looked through. As one might expect, this new level of optical performance will come at a pretty hefty premium: $2,339.00 for the 8.5x42. Keep in mind that the sale on the original Swarovski EL binocular runs through December and may be your last chance to purchase a Swarovski binocular for under $2,000.00.
