International Migratory Bird Day-2009

Birding organizations offer a variety of services through their websites, but I don’t think I have ever seen a more comprehensive offering of programs and products as I encountered when logged onto the International Migratory Bird Day website. Founded in the early 1990’s, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center can be credited with establishing IMBD. With the goal of educating thousands of people about migratory birds and their conservation, the first celebration was hosted at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.Int Bird Day.jpg

Today, the IMBD is coordinated by Environment for the Americas. Although the second Saturday in May is the official date for IMBD, the organization recognizes this is not the best migration time for all areas. To encourage educational activities in many different communities, an IMBD event can be hosted by a wide variety of groups during the appropriate migration time for their location.

This year’s theme is Celebrating Birds in Culture. From event posters, a press kit, agenda ideas, and even a Power Point Presentation, the IMBD provides everything you need to get started. Take a look at the free download for educational and promotional materials on the website and related items to purchase at the online store, then start planning your own event!
